On older properties, it was common to build in a way that moisture entering a wall could escape as easily as possible.  Lime mortar was a common way to achieve this, allow water and water vapour to escape the property.  Over time, lime pointing can deteriorate and may need to be replaced.  If you are in the local area, we can help.

There are two main reasons why lime pointing repairs are needed.  The first is that time has had an impact and the original pointing is worn.  This can be due to weathering or a lack of maintenance while sometimes issues such as a leaking gutter can cause damage.  The other reason is that the lime pointing has been replaced with something inappropriate like cement mortar at some point and this is causing damp issues inside the house as water can’t escape.  In this situation, the cement or other type of mortar would be removed, and the traditional lime mortar added in its place.
